Nairobi, 17th March 2026 : The Kenya Permanent Mission to UN-Habitat joined partners in Korogocho, Nairobi, during the visit of Dr. Abraham Korir Sing’Oei, Principal Secretary, State Department for Foreign Affairs of Kenya, to the newly established Material Recovery Facility (MRF). This facility—the first of its kind in an informal settlement in Nairobi—marks a milestone in advancing community-led solid waste management and circular economy solutions.
The MRF supports community-based organizations in waste collection, sorting, and recycling, while creating jobs and improving environmental conditions in the Korogocho community. In addition, the facility includes a community social hall, designed to host indoor games, training sessions, and meetings, thereby strengthening social cohesion and community empowerment.
During his visit, Dr. Sing’Oei emphasized the importance of the project in promoting sustainable urban development and empowering communities. He noted that effective waste management can generate livelihoods, restore dignity to neighbourhoods, and deliver tangible benefits to citizens. He further announced Government support to the Korogocho MRF Umbrella Association through the provision of three computers, a television, and a decoder under Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Both the Italian Government and UN-Habitat reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting the initiative, underscoring it as a true symbol of effective and impactful international cooperation.
Through such partnerships, the Kenya Mission to UN-Habitat continues to advance its mandate of promoting urban resilience and sustainable urban development in Kenya.
