KENYA AND REPUBLIC OF KOREA DISCUSS COOPERATION ON NAIROBI RIVERS REGENERATION AND STRENGTHENING UN-HABITAT

Nairobi, 1st October 2026: H.E. Amb. Nakumicha Wafula, E.G.H., Permanent Representative of Kenya to UN-Habitat, received H.E. Kang Hyungshik, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Kenya, who paid a courtesy call on her at the Mission.

The Permanent Representative expressed appreciation to Ambassador Kang for attending the Nairobi Rivers Commission Roundtable Breakfast Meeting held on 8th September 2026. She highlighted Korea’s successful transformation of Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon and invited Korea to share its technical expertise, knowledge and best practices as Kenya advances the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Initiative. She also extended an invitation to the Ambassador to attend the Nairobi Rivers Commission Festival, scheduled to take place later in the year.

The Permanent Representative and Ambassador Kang discussed opportunities for strengthening UN-Habitat’s mandate and operations, as well as the ongoing preparations for the commemoration of UN-Habitat at 50, scheduled to take place in 2027.

The Permanent Representative lauded the longstanding relations between Kenya and the Republic of Korea and acknowledged Korea’s investments and development cooperation in Kenya, including in the areas of health, ICT, refugee resettlement and support, and water management, among others.

The Permanent Mission of Kenya to UN-Habitat looks forward to continued cooperation with the Republic of Korea, both bilaterally and through UN-Habitat.
