Nairobi 27th November 2025: H.E. Amb. Nakhumicha Wafula, E.G.H., Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN-Habitat, paid a courtesy call on Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, Chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC). The Commission, established by H.E. the President of the Republic of Kenya in October 2024, operates under the Executive Office of the Deputy President and is mandated, among other functions, to reclaim the rivers of Nairobi as the backbone of the city’s blue and green infrastructure for an improved urban environment and enhanced quality of life.
Its broader mandate encompasses a wide range of activities, including catchment protection, riparian restoration, waste management, and community engagement initiatives, all geared towards reversing the ecological degradation of Nairobi’s rivers and promoting sustainable water resource management practices.
The meeting explored ways of harnessing the immense potential of multi-sectoral cooperation in river basin management, beginning with the establishment of a tripartite structured engagement between the Commission, the Permanent Mission, and UN-Habitat.
