Nairobi, 10 April 2026: Today we launched the GEF-8 Sustainable Cities Project—marking a major milestone in Nairobi’s transition toward integrated, low-carbon, and nature-positive urban development. By translating policy into practical action, the project seeks to improve livelihoods, restore ecosystems, and strengthen resilience for communities across the city.
Following the launch, a field visit to Kamukunji Sub-County along the Nairobi River offered firsthand insight into ongoing efforts. The Nairobi Rivers Commission has already made notable progress through river clean-up, riparian restoration, and improved waste management—laying a strong foundation for transformative interventions under the project.
Building on this momentum, the Kamukunji pilot will deliver integrated solutions in river restoration, green infrastructure, sustainable mobility, and inclusive public spaces—benefiting over 85,000 residents, traders, and commuters.
The Kenya Permanent Mission to UN-Habitat, remains firmly committed to advancing sustainable urban development in close collaboration with UN-Habitat, UNEP, Nairobi City County, and the Global Environment Facility.
Together, these partnerships underscore a shared resolve to drive practical, inclusive, and sustainable urban transformation for Nairobi—where ambition meets action.
