Nairobi, 28th August 2026: The Kenya Permanent Mission to UN Habitat, led by H.E. Amb. Susan Nakhumicha joined H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and fellow Kenyans at a symposium held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Constitution of Kenya. The momentous occasion provided an opportunity to reflect on the 16 years since the promulgation of the Constitution and to take stock of the progress made in its implementation, as well as the milestones and challenges encountered along the way.
The Constitution of Kenya is widely regarded as one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. At its heart is the Bill of Rights, which provides a comprehensive framework for the protection and promotion of fundamental rights and freedoms. Notably, it expressly guarantees every person the right to accessible and adequate housing and reasonable standards of sanitation.
The 16th anniversary therefore offers an important moment to celebrate the gains made, reflect on the journey so far, and renew our collective commitment to fully realizing the transformative promise of the Constitution for all Kenyans.
