KENYA SHOWCASES COMMUNITY-DRIVEN PATHWAYS TO INCLUSIVE SLUM UPGRADING AT WUF13 ACADEMY MASTERCLASS

Today, the Kenya Mission to UN‑Habitat participated in the WUF13 Academy Masterclass “From Eradication to Integration,” which focused on bridging the policy–reality gap in slum upgrading through community‑led programmes. In addition to engaging with the four thematic pillars—governance, academic, technical, and real‑world models—the Mission made a presentation highlighting:

  1. Policy foundations underpinning Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme and slum upgrading initiatives.
  2. Challenges of affordability and the embedded social housing component designed to reach low‑income households.
  3. The imperative of tenure security as a prerequisite for sustainable development and in‑situ upgrading.
  4. Kenya’s land dispute resolution mechanisms and institutional frameworks that safeguard community rights and support equitable urban transformation.

This contribution underscored Kenya’s commitment to inclusive urban development, participatory approaches, and community‑driven solutions that transform informal settlements into resilient, integrated neighborhoods.
