KENYA SHOWCASES CHUKA MARKET CRÈCHE MODEL AS A CATALYST FOR INCLUSIVE URBAN DEVELOPMENT AT WUF13

At the World Urban Forum in Baku, the Mission participated in a side event on the importance of crèches in marketplaces, with Chuka Market in Tharaka Nithi County as a case study. Discussions highlighted challenges including funding and sustainability, quality of care, lack of policy integration, cultural and social barriers, and infrastructure and safety in crowded markets. The event underscored that market crèches are transformative social innovations—empowering women, nurturing children and strengthening local economies. Their success depends on sustainable financing, caregiver training, policy integration and community acceptance, with local revenue, partnerships and evidence‑based policy offering pathways to overcome these challenges.
