UN Headquarters Nairobi, October 22nd: H.E. Ambassador Nakhumicha Wafula, E.G.H., Permanent Representative of Kenya to the UN-Habitat, officially co-opened the Second Session of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Expert Working Group on Adequate Housing for All at the UN Complex in Nairobi. In her opening remarks, the Permanent Representative underscored that, as the host country and Co-Chair, Kenya remains steadfast in its support for the UN-Habitat mandate, emphasizing that the realization of adequate housing is a non-negotiable pillar of Kenya’s national development agenda.
The Governments of Kenya and France serve as Co-Chairs of the Working Group, a mandate that will end once the successor co-chairs are elected later today, during the afternoon session. The intergovernmental expert working group was established by the UN-Habitat Assembly through Resolution 2/7 in 2023 to compile best practices, map support, and propose a new, robust framework for measurement. Ambassador Nakhumicha expressed gratitude to UN-Habitat, under the leadership of Ms. Anacláudia Rossbach the Executive Director, and to Member States for their continued support in implementing Resolution 2/7 on Adequate Housing for All.
The two-day event brings together Member States, nominated experts, and other global stakeholders to advance a phased roadmap that will culminate in a comprehensive set of housing policy recommendations to be presented at the third session of the UN-Habitat Assembly in 2029.
