KENYA AND UNITED NATIONS LAUNCH LANDMARK UNON EXPANSION AT AFRICA FORWARD SUMMIT OPENING

The Kenya Permanent Mission to UN‑Habitat, led by H.E. Amb. Susan Nakhumicha, joined H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, H.E. Amb. Ida Odinga, Permanent Representative to UNEP/UNON, H.E. António Guterres, Secretary‑General of the United Nations, together with fellow diplomats, dignitaries and senior officials, at the groundbreaking of the new United Nations Conference Facilities Project and the commissioning of completed phases of the Gigiri Master Plan at UNON, marking the opening of the Africa Forward Summit.

This landmark occasion reaffirmed Nairobi’s unique role as the only United Nations headquarters in the Global South and a rising centre for multilateral diplomacy, climate action, and sustainable urban transformation. The expansion and modernisation of UNON reflect the shared commitment of Kenya and the United Nations to building a more inclusive, effective and responsive multilateral system capable of addressing emerging global challenges.

The upgraded facilities will significantly enhance Nairobi’s capacity to host major international conferences, further strengthening Kenya’s standing as a premier hub for international cooperation, dialogue and sustainable development.
